Several things can cause a drain to clog. It includes fat, oil, and grease from foods being sent down the drain. The fats won’t get out of your plumbing system; instead, they will solidify in the pipe and eventually cause clogging. Toilet paper or feminine hygiene products flushed down into the toilet can also block your pipes since they don’t dissolve in water.

Generally speaking, any organic matter which does not break down readily in water, e.g., grease, plastic bags, tissues, diapers, etc., can clog your drain.

Insulating your home is the best way to prevent your pipes from freezing. If there are exposed pipes, you can try wrapping them with heating tape. Covering your crawlspace, closing the garage door, and opening the kitchen door and cabinets may also help. It would be best if you also let the faucet drip when the water drops below pipe-freezing temperature.

A puddle of water under a pipe is a common sign of a leak. But leaks aren’t always visible, especially if the leak happens in lines that run through the wall or are installed underground.

If you think there’s a leak in your plumbing system, verify it by checking your water meter. Note the number on the water meter and then close all plumbing fixtures on your property. Leave it like that for a few minutes or hours, then recheck the water meter.

If the water meter’s reading still changes even if no one is using your plumbing fixture, there’s likely a leak. But still, the best way to know whether there’s a leak is to contact a trusted plumber for a leak detection service.
